Jab Harry Met Sejal(2017) Review

Shahrukh Khan and Anushka Sharma in Jab Harry Met Sejal

Director : Imtiaz Ali
Genre : Romance, Comedy

Jab Imtiaz Made Better Films!

I'd like to imagine there's a bar somewhere in a quaint town in Europe. Could be in a picturesque location such as Corsica, Prague, London, anywhere, as long as it's in Europe. Three men step into the bar and each one orders a beer. They look at each other at the counter and decide to talk to each other. The first man says - "Hi, I am Jai(You'd remember him as Saif Ali Khan from Love Aaj Kal). For years, I have pursued my dream job, but now, when I have everything I ever wanted, I realize I'm still missing something." The second man stares blankly at the momentary foam formed at the top of his bottle, and says - "Hi, I am Ved(You'd remember him as Ranbir Kapoor from Tamasha). For years, I have climbed the corporate ladder, and now I'm beginning to realize that I have been telling myself a lie for a long time, and I am actually someone else." The two men turn to the third fellow, who says - "Hi, I am Harry. I am a tourist guide who travels to different countries, but for a while now"-

I don't think I really need to continue elaborating any further on what story Harry could possibly share with the other two. However, while the three men exchange their similar soul-searching stories, I'd imagine the bartender, who just happens to be Imtiaz Ali, to be listening to their stories carefully. Somewhere in the deep crevices of Imtiaz's brain, an idea was forming. The idea to make a film, a film without a story, a film with a complex protagonist, a complex protagonist who required himself to internalize deeply and embark on a soulful journey of self-discovery. The idea was highly novel and it worked! It worked for Jab We Met, it worked for Love Aaj Kal, it worked for Rockstar, it worked for Highway, it worked for Tamasha. It worked for all these films, and it fails spectacularly for Jab Harry Met Sejal. The reason is pretty obvious and that is the lack of any novelty.

I'll be frank. I have always been partial towards Shahrukh Khan. Even when the most loyal of SRKians seemed to desert him for making cinematic nightmares such as Happy New Year and Dilwale, a film that got me wheezing from the epiglottis in an attempt to find the exit, I was still a firm believer in his acting skills, after all, he is a theatre actor like me. The solution was really simple, he just had to start picking up better scripts from better directors. And boy, he did not disappoint! Having projects helmed by the new wave of filmmakers such as Maneesh Sharma, Rahul Dholakia, Imtiaz Ali, and Anand L. Rai, would make any serious actor enviable. However, while Fan was critically acclaimed, it just did not have enough 'masala' to make it financially beneficial. Raees was the SRK film we were all waiting for, a film that gave SRK the opportunity to flex his acting chops, without compromising on his star power, and while it was a hit, it still couldn't match the collections as his other 'Khan'temporaries. All hopes were pinned on SRK's first collaboration with the modern day Yash-Raj Imtiaz Ali.
With Jab Harry Met Sejal, Shahrukh oozes freshness and sarcasm in nearly every frame he is in. It is perhaps one of the most unique romantic roles he has taken so far. Unlike his pure Raj/Rahul roles in all his previous romantic outings, SRK's Harry is a flawed guy who is far from perfect, a guy who enters into casual relationships with multiple women, only to leave them soon. This is a character that is amazingly self-aware of his own shortcomings, and Shahrukh plays him with impressive restraint and maturity. There are quite a few scenes where he internalizes his character's pain with a panache that would make Ranbir Kapoor proud. If only the story had been as novel as SRK's character.

Anushka Sharma is a major disappointment as Sejal. While her chemistry with Shahrukh produces some genuine sparks, despite her getting the Gujju diction right, she comes across as caricaturish in most of her scenes. Not only is her character underdeveloped, but poor Anushka gets precious little chance to really add anything extraordinary to the film. She is capable of so much more.

Jab Harry Met Sejal is the same old wine served in a new bottle type of film

Chandan Roy Sanyal, of Kaminey fame shows up in a thankless cameo, in an entirely unnecessary sub-plot that briefly touches upon the ongoing immigrant issues persisting in Europe.

The music by Pritam is foot tapping, but you occasionally miss A.R. Rahman's soulful score. The film has a wafer-thin plot that in hindsight feels really stupid and forced. I fail to understand why on Earth would a pair of strangers agree to travel countless countries to find a lost ring! But then again, in most cases, watching a Bollywood film requires some suspension of disbelief. Miss Lovely cinematographer K.U. Mohanan does some decent work here, but unlike the vintage wine treatment imparted by Ravi Varman's cinematography to Imtiaz's previous work Tamasha, it fails to mask the many flaws in the story.

The problem with Jab Harry Met Sejal is not that it is the 'same old wine served in a new bottle' type of film. If it were released before Tamasha, I would still rate the latter as a far better film. Jab Harry Met Sejal could easily have held its own charm in Imtiaz's filmography, irrespective of how similar its primary character is as compared to Imtiaz's other protagonists. However, at 2.5 hours long, the editing is sloppy, and the screenplay, while innovative at first, gets repetitive. The jokes run out post interval, making way for lengthy conversations that stray into Jab Tak Hai Jaan(yawn!) territory.

As a lover of Imtiaz Ali films, I was left underwhelmed. As an SRK fan, all my hopes are pinned now on his film with Tanu Weds Manu  director Anand L. Rai's next film.

I'm going with a generous 2/5.

Stray Observations :

* Does every major character in a film about a lost soul have to be a singer/aspiring singer? Starting to seem like a silly excuse for getting the characters to break into a song-dance routine.

  1. You are still being very lenient in your review. Put aside Imtiaz Ali tag for a second and imagine, if this film were to be directed by the hopeless Mohit Suri, Siddharth Anand or Apoorva Lakhia kind of directors(?) would you have been this lenient. So let's step out of the past glory of Imtiaz & SRK and call a spade a spade.
When Harry Met Sejal is an utter disaster. One of the worst written scripts to be greenlit ever!
The film was regressive, preachy, boring, illogical & downright silly n stupid!
I am a lifetime fan of Imtiaz Ali's and also respect SRK's contribution to hindi cinema.
    But....
What the heck were these guys smoking?

Although, the film doesn’t have any dull moment. The first half has lots of laughter moments. Shah Rukh Khan’s wit and humour timing is excellent, even Anushka and her replies are hilarious. The second half becomes serious and makes this love story more interesting.

Imtiaz Ali’s direction deserves a special mention here, the director made this film with a good intent and didn’t let us feel bored while watching the film. The film has been shot at beautiful locales of Budapest, Amsterdam, Prague, Lisbon and Punjab, that’s a visual treat for eyes. Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma’s endearing chemistry makes it a must watch film. Pritam’s music weaves pure magic for the film, be it Radha, Beech Beech Mein, Safar, Butterfly, Hawayein or the latest one – Phurrr, every song has its own magic. The cinematography is brilliant. Everything works in the favour of the film. Be it SRK-Anushka’s performance, Imtiaz Ali’s direction, Pritam’s composition, we are feeling affection for this beautiful romantic love story.

  2. 2/5 seems not just generous, but it's like charity. And this is from a SRK fan.
The plot being silly is still ok. But the movie lacked direction and had a "kami" just like Herry. I fail to understand just when did Sejal start falling for him. Maybe i fell asleep.
SRK can romance and still has his charm. He just should stop trying so hard.
I think I will watch DDLJ today or Chak de. It will make me feel better.

    1. Jab Harry Met Sejal Is The Love Story We’ve Been Seeking This Year

Imtiaz Ali‘s latest offering, Jab Harry Met Sejal, is just like a lullaby. Nah, don’t get me wrong. It doesn’t put you to sleep. What I mean is that it’s sweet, soothing and leaves you with a happy sense of calm.

The story is simple. It’s a run-of-the-mill tale of an engaged girl and a casanova boy meeting and falling in love. But what makes it different? It’s execution.

Filmmaker Imtiaz brings out the endearing camaraderie between a pair that we’ve already seen twice on screen – Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma – but like never before.

What I loved most about this love story was the rapport shared by Harry and Sejal. It was extremely authentic, with their bond established over a period of time, and only after they had their fair share of ‘moments’. Unlike other recent Bollywood love stories, the two did not get super attached overnight, but grew into their relationship.

In fact, I’ve been missing watching these bittersweet moments between the hero and heroine… the build-up that awakens those intense emotions, and that longing for attachment between them. It’s good to finally come across a true blue romantic Bollywood saga after a long time.

Anushka nails the Gujarati accent as Sejal without making it caricature-ish like Dayaben from Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. She is adorable and ups the energy of the movie to a pleasant high. Also, OH MY GOD – SRK has never looked sexier! Tour guide Harry exudes Punjabi swag and I can imagine why it’s never difficult for him to woo a woman in any country. It’s delightful to see him in this avatar. The superstar has delivered a very impressive performance here.

The duo embark on a quest to find Sejal’s missing engagement ring and in the process, they find something they both had been seeking. Well, I don’t want to divulge any more details in order to spare you from any spoilers.

      Jab Harry Met Sejal

Pritam‘s music is soulful. All the songs are well-placed without hampering the pace of the film. Hawayein and Ghar are my personal favourites. Mad props to the composer for trying something different and experimenting with the track, Yaadon Mein. The heartbreaking number features Harry and Sejal in a rather emotional mode and might just make you teary-eyed. So keep those tissues ready, just in case.

Aru Krishansh Verma plays Harry’s colleague and friend. But tbh, there’s nothing about his performance that makes him stand out. Evelyn Sharma preens in and out in a blink-and-miss appearance. Chandan Roy Sanyal on the other hand, delivers a noteworthy act as a negative but comical character.

Shot across the gorgeous locales of Amsterdam, Prague, Lisbon and a few other European destinations, this movie is filled with sequences that are a treat for the eyes. Of course, a lot of credit goes to cinematographer K.U. Mohanan, who has captured it all beautifully.

However, the editing by Aarti Bajaj seemed a little choppy and could have been tighter. The second half is quite slow and you might just feel a little impatient towards the end. There’s a wedding sequence with some dance and random brouhaha that seems rather forced and could have been easily skipped.

But just like all Imtiaz Ali stories, JHMS too has its trademark Sufiana charm and that never ceases to give us the *feels*.

On a side note: A Euro trip with our very own king of romance – isn’t that every DDLJ fan’s dream come true?

Overall, this one’s a light-hearted watch that will reaffirm your faith in love. It definitely deserves a single watch if not more.

  4. Shahrukh has lost his capability of choosing a script which will be loved by audience. I think he must learn from Akshay kamar & Aamir khan.

On a side note: A Euro trip with our very own king of romance – isn’t that every DDLJ fan’s dream come true?

Overall, this one’s a light-hearted watch that will reaffirm your faith in love. It definitely deserves a single watch if not more.

  7. Much has been said about Imtiaz Ali's latest film, Jab Harry Met Sejal and un-surprisingly, there's a lot more (unecessary) hate than love. Before I go any further, let me clarify that neither am I an SRK fan nor am I being paid to write this. I am just a passionate Hindi cinema lover (like many of you) who's appalled at the extreme hate and outrage towards the film which honestly it does not deserve.

Yes, it is not the greatest piece of work we've ever seen but it certainly does not fall in the category of worse films ever, in fact, it's far away from that. I read several reviews and views on the internet and it really made me wonder if those people saw a different version of the film than what I did or if they even saw the film. There were a few questions raised by people which apparently made the film 'non-sensical', well, let me try answering some of them here.

Why couldn't Harry go back to his home-town? Well, because he had run away from his home, leaving behind his family who loved him a lot. He ran away because he wanted to be a singer but of course, failed and lived with the guilt and shame.

Did Sejal really think she'd find the ring just lying around somewhere? If you ask Sejal, yes, she did. There might be some things you believe in - whether they're logical or not, isn't the question - she believed that "dhoondne se toh bhagwaan bhi mil jaata hai". She was naive and a believer. Also, it was not just about finding the ring, it was more about proving herself. Her fiance found her incapable and careless, she wanted to prove him wrong.

How come Sejal's family left her alone in Europe with Harry? How did they trust her to be with a man all alone? He was a tour guide in Europe, who are all well trained & instructed to treat their visitors with utmost respect. He had spent an entire month with the family on the tour & they obviously trusted him more than they'd trust any random stranger. Plus Sejal didn't intend to stay there for ages, she had hoped to take the next flight back home as soon as she finds her ring.

Why is Harry so lonely, broken and lost?Because, his life experiences made him cynical. He failed to fulfill his dream, which made him even more helpless. He left his loving family behind, which added to his misery. He had lost his identity. He tries to drown his failures in alcohol and casual sex which makes him label himself as "cheap, unworthy guy". Knowingly or unknowingly, he's seeking the love he thinks he's not worthy of anymore because at the end of the day, he's not a bad guy at heart & all he wants is love.

    1. Why did Sejal want him to find her 'layak'? Because she had low self-esteem. Her fiance always made her feel useless, inadequate and blamed her for every situation and dominated her. Plus her over protective family. She pretended she didn't care but she wanted his attention. The fact that Harry, who was evidently attracted to anything that moves was also not attracted to her, made her feel unattractive. Do you guys even know what a person with low self-esteem goes through? I do because I've been there once upon a time. It can impact you deeply and to an extent, even make you seem bipolar. I'd seek approvals on even my mere existence from people who didn't even matter & would be a different person outside my household so I totally get her.

Why did she behave the way she did?She came from a conservative Gujarati family. She was sheltered, so much so that her idea of a "romantic" engagement was being proposed in a restaurant in front of all her aunties, buas and chachas. She behaved the way her family expected her to behave. She explored and discovered herself when she met Harry. She was the lawyer of her family business which showed she's lived all her life by laws and regulations but that's not who she was. She panicked because she was terrified of doing something wrong and being less than perfect for her family & fiance. She just wanted to break free, break the rules she's been living by. She got a sense of freedom when she was around Harry and found her true self.

      Delete
    2. How could Harry objectify her by comparing her to a china-vase? Really? It's not objectifying, it's a metaphor where he just equated her untainted beauty to that of a china-vase. What did he mean by she's not that type? You do realise there are people who just want to have plain fun and then just get on with life (which is completely fine) and all he meant was Sejal wasn't one of those. Remember when Bunny tells Naina (in YJHD, yes) that she's made for love and not flirting? Harry did the same, just in a so called 'cheaper' way because well, he was a self proclaimed cheapster.

How was Harry cheating on his 'ex' justified? Firstly, she wasn't his ex. Their relationship was more on the lines of 'friends-with-benefits'. He wasn't serious, she wasn't serious and they were just together to have fun and mind you, with mutual consent. Let's stop blaming the guy for being an ass always, please?

Harry & Sejal lived in the same room but never had sex, unbelievable! Really? Nothing was stopping Harry, not even Sejal. He could've gone ahead and done it but that wasn't who he was. As Sejal said, he had a wrong impression of himself. He wasn't what he pretended to be. He wasn't a cheap & bad guy, after all. Just a guilt-ridden, lost soul who yearned for true love which he believed he didn't deserve anymore & would be snatched away from him.

The film had too many songs. Come on now. One of the reasons why foreigners are so fascinated by Bollywood is because of its colorful singing and dancing culture. The biggest blockbuster of the 90s, Hum Aapke Hain Koun had almost 15 songs but we loved it. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam had almost 11 and we loved that too. And suddenly, we have a problem with too many songs in a film, which by the way, beautifully compliments the narrative of the movie? We've been so busy bashing that we even forgot the give the amount of love Pritam's hardwork deserves for churning out a genuinely beautiful album.

      Delete
    3. Why did Harry always try to drift away from her? Because he felt he didn't deserve her love and warmth. Because he knew it wouldn't last for long. Because he knew she'd have to go back at some point, leaving him alone and heart broken. Because he knew, for them to be together, she would have to take the path which'll make her a "gandi aurat".

What did Sejal find in Harry? The void that was in her life. She found herself. The way she felt around him, she hadn't felt that ever before. It felt like a dream to her which was too good to be true because her reality was harsh. She could be herself with him, she wasn't expected to pretend or behave in a certain way. She felt free and complete. He gave her the respect and affection that her fiance never did.

The damn ring was in her bag, the whole drama could've been avoided had she just checked it. If you feel that, then my friend, you totally missed the point of the film. It wasn't the ring that she was seeking, it's just a metaphor to describe that actually what we are seeking or looking for is the one seeking us. They both were lost souls but found themselves in each other. They discovered their lost emotions.

    4. Jab Harry Met Sejal is a simple, sweet love story and should be taken as one. I'm not sure if people went in expecting to watch an Inception or something because it definitely did not promise anything like that. Imtiaz Ali assured a love story of two individuals on a journey and that is exactly what he delivers with some heartfelt performances by SRK and Anushka. They are literally the heart and soul of the film and JHMS is one of their finest works till date. And their chemistry is FIRE.

TBH, I'd anyday prefer a JHMS over the Happy New Years, Dilwales Or Ra Ones of the Bolly world. Watch the movie without any expectations or pre-conceived notions & you'll leave with a smile on your face. There's nothing to hate. Yes, you may have a few criticisms here & there but the excessive bashing is totally uncalled for. Come on guys, where did we get so much negativity from?

    ?

    Jab Harry Met Sejal

Pritam‘s music is soulful. All the songs are well-placed without hampering the pace of the film. Hawayein and Ghar are my personal favourites. Mad props to the composer for trying something different and experimenting with the track, Yaadon Mein. The heartbreaking number features Harry and Sejal in a rather emotional mode and might just make you teary-eyed. So keep those tissues ready, just in case.

    ?

    Jab Harry Met Sejal

  10. My Take

I personally believe that there are always two flows in any form of visual art. One is what audience perceives and another, more important is what artist is trying to convey. Imtiaz Ali is totally convinced and firm on his views here too as always! I feel we, as Indian audience, take movies starring superstars very casually and lose out on what exactly the director wants to convey. Its not just about finding the lost ring – its about finding the missing piece of life. And even if its about the missing ring, see the way Imtiaz has portrayed it.

STORY FOR THIS SPECIFIC MOVIE IS A SIMPLE & UNCOMPLICATED LOVE STORY IF YOU SEE SUPERFICIALLY, BUT THERE'S A STRONG CURRENT OF A GENUINE HUMAN TENDENCIES, COMPLEX EMOTIONS, AND CULTIVATED MINDSETS.

Its nice to see Shah Rukh Khan as a normal working professional who can be in anyone's life. I appreciate his efforts to come out of his comfort zone of being in a larger than life role. Anushka is pleasant on screen and does her job perfectly. Side characters are also important and well utilized.

    1. If you've seen Imtiaz Ali's earlier movies, you would have observed a pattern – he always plays with very complex human emotions brilliantly and he can easily make people cry the very next moment they are found laughing. Here also, there are some very typical of Imtiaz painted scenes. She's looking for remains of forced relationship. He's searching for her happiness. When Sejal finds that amazing comfort with Harry, she doesn't hesitate to sleep besides him, cuddled, and audience doesn't find it wrong – how come an engaged girl does like this? – I think all such questions we should leave behind.

THE DIRECTOR EXPECTS THE AUDIENCE TO FILL SOME GAPS IN THE STORY ON THEIR OWN. HE EXPECTS YOU TO BE AN INTELLIGENT AUDIENCE AND WANTS YOU TO THINK BEYOND WHAT IS JUST SHOWN ON SCREEN

      SEJAL

Sejal repeatedly asks Harry – how am I? Don't you find me sexy? Don't you feel like doing something to me – this insecurity of her goes to an extent that she's ready to sign a indemnity bond with Harry that if anything happens between Harry and her, its completely her responsibility and Harry not be blamed. See the undercurrent again – She's not being appraised or appreciated by a man of her ring – her fiancĂ© but craves for words of appreciation from Harry, who finds her cute, sweet and sister type – which she finds insulting because probably its enough of her being sweet girl. Her reaction in the end of the movie when Harry kisses her is fantabulous. By the way, this is first ever on screen kiss from the King of Romance – and Anushka "seals" it beautifully! The women in Indian society have been facing this issue of not being appreciated by their own men, is put forth by the director in a very subtle manner.

    2. May it be arranged marriages or love, the charisma of the relationship can be there forever if taken extra efforts, I strongly feel.

There are some well directed and well thought of scenes in JHMS to make the movie impactful. The scene where Harry saves Sejal from a pub, Sejal fights for Harry in a restaurant against his Ex-girlfriend, are wonderfully portrayed. Sejal strongly makes an impression on Harry and convinces him to go back home, in Frankfurt – as he avoids going there because of his ex-girlfriend. She also attends the marriage of his colleague and when asked about what is the chemistry between her and Harry, she waits for him to answer. He prefers not to open his heart as Sejal is a client after all and he feels he's cheap and just a tour guide.

      Harry

Harry – A person who left his home at very young age, to go to Canada (a lifestyle dream of many people in that region in India) lands up in Europe and works as a tour coordinator. He has some disturbing memories of things back home which make him cry, make him not go back to the concept called as home. A home is a place everyone wants to be at, that's the most comfortable place for us. He struggles there. Big time. Think of a situation where you have a routine nomadic life – and there is a home, but you don't want come back there.

Every one of us has some or the other emotional block and we need to come up with a solution for good.

THIS MOVIE ALSO SPEAKS ABOUT SPEAKING OUT ONE'S EMOTIONS ABOUT THE SPECIAL PERSON IN OUR LIFE AND THAT TOO AT THE RIGHT TIME. LIFE HARDLY GIVES US SECOND CHANCES AND ONE NEEDS TO BE AN OPPORTUNIST TO GRAB THE THINGS AT RIGHT TIME WHEN IT IS IN FRONT OF US.

There have been rounds of debates on Shah Rukh Khan's age and his choice of movies. I don't find this act of his strange, rather the Hero has become a subtle actor here. The scenes where he has shown the emotional turmoil within is worth watching and appreciating.

Overall performance of the actors is excellent. Music could have been better, though, songs are written beautifully. Picturesque locations and edited well, so overall impact comes as expected.

I would have loved to see their after marriage life for some time, though.

      My rating – 4.0 on 5. Direction – 4.5/5 Acting – 4.5/5 Music – 3.0/5 Dialogue -4.0/5

Recommendation – Go for a non glam SRK and Anushka + A good direction by Imtiaz.

  11. Starring Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma, Jab Harry Met Sejal is the latest offering from Imtiaz Ali, the celebrated director of Jab We Met, Love Aaj Kal, and Rockstar. Jab Harry Met Sejal is essentially the story of a travel guide named Harinder 'Harry' Singh Nehra and Sejal Zaveri who travel across Europe in search of Sejal's misplaced engagement ring. A reluctant Harry is forced by his boss to help Sejal in every way possible. What ensues is a journey of self-realisation for both the protagonists as they gradually begin to come to terms with what their hearts truly seek.

There has been a great buzz around the film ever since its titled was announced (it was apparently suggested by Ranbir Kapoor), although it subsequently became entangled in a major controversy when CBFC Chairperson Pahlaj Nihalani objected to the use of the word "intercourse" in one of the movie's mini trailers released on YouTube. Has the film delivered? It depends on what you're looking for.

    1. 'Jab Harry Met Sejal' is more about character interaction than about plot development... essentially it is a performance-driven film made special by some brilliant direction. Imtiaz Ali has been associated with rom-com right from his debut feature film Socha Na Tha. Although, his distinctive filmmaking style makes him stand out in Bollywood he has often been accused of laziness in that he tends to revisit his older ideas instead of exploring new themes. This is evident in Jab Harry Met Sejal too which draws on familiar motifs and themes, with glimmers of films such as Certified Copy, the Before trilogy, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Ali's own works. But there is nothing wrong in revisiting old ideas and themes as long as you can do them justice. While watching the film one gets a feeling that Imtiaz Ali has finally come of age as a filmmaker. Jab Harry Met Sejal unfolds like a fantasy but that's what is expected of cinematic love stories, where escapism is one of the greatest pleasures. Ultimately, here is rom-com made in the vein of European slice of life films and so it's bound to disappoint those looking for a conventional Bollywood masala concoction.

However, there is no denying that the film's core is very much Indian. The fact is that Imtiaz Ali couldn't have made a Certified Copy or a Before Sunrise. Not because he lacks the ability but because it would most likely not work in India at a commercial level; with such big stars it would be too big a risk. So he tries to do the next best thing— accumulate ideas and try and rework them within limitations. Jab Harry Met Sejal comes across as an amalgamation of complex ideas. And while one seldom gets to see a rom-com of such sophistication in commercial Hindi cinema, a Bollywood filmmaker can only take so many liberties. So even though he tries his best to fuse different ideas he ultimately settles for a predictable ending that's vintage Bollywood.

It unfolds like a fantasy but that's what is expected of cinematic love stories, where escapism is one of the greatest pleasures. But the good news is Shah Rukh Khan's much awaited return to his beloved genre i.e. romance. Ali pushes SRK to a point where he is forced to let go of the romantic image that he has been carrying for years and in the process helping him reinvent his persona as the new age King of Romance. As for Anushka Sharma, she provides SRK with the perfect foil. Her characterisation is somewhat bizarre but she pulls it off brilliantly. In fact, it's difficult to think of another actress who could have played it with such grace. As expected, the movie is brilliant on the technical front; the movie's cinematography, editing, music, and sound design are top-notch. But it does suffer from some pacing issues. Also some might complain that the story is a bit undercooked. But, truth be told, the film is more about character interaction than about plot development. The chance encounter of two strangers and their subsequent journey is what the film is focused upon. And, so, essentially it is a performance-driven film made special by some brilliant direction. In other words, the trio of Imtiaz Ali, SRK and Anushka Sharma make Jab Harry Met Sejal a treat to watch... so make sure that you don't listen to the naysayers!

  12. A deep, personal conflict, hidden away under layers of daily life, stifled by the relentless passage of time, ensconced in loneliness; fate leading to a chance meeting with another soul who offers a glimpse and glimmer of escape; and a physical journey that leads to finding oneself within; this is the essence of every Imtiaz Ali film to date. The reason Why Jab Harry Met Sejal is already being called his weakest film yet, is that despite hanging on to these same tropes, it is still a film that departs from the paths that Ali usually treads on his journeys and a journey on an untested path isn't everyone's cup of tea.

But it is in this departure that JHMS stands apart from his previous work, and there is so much in the film that belies the somewhat hasty dismissal of JHMS as Imtiaz Ali's weakest film so far.

Is the protagonist SRK's boisterous, homesick Punjabi tour guide, shackled by the guilt of leaving his home in Punjab for greener pastures, in the dead of the night without a semblance of an explanation? Or is it Anushka Sharma's entitled, obnoxious Gujarati bride-to-be, ostensibly looking for her lost engagement ring, but subconsciously looking for an escape from a married life that, in a conventional rich Gujarati setup, would ensure she's no longer bound by her own moral compass, but by that of the entrenched, seemingly-unshakeable patriarchy?

    1. You'd think that as the ranking star of the enterprise, the film would be about SRK's Harry. Indeed, Rockstar and Tamasha are so completely about Jordan and Ved respectively, that you came away reeling from discovering what those characters went through

But Harry already knows what's haunting him. He knows that he misses Punjab, its blooming fields, and its songs louder than tractors. All he has to do is go back home, to begin his journey to redemption. It is Sejal who undergoes the more significant change as she makes tough choices, but because the film has the two of them sharing the screen for most of the runtime, you never quite see the obvious.

And how those two share the screen! SRK does much of what made him the star he is, but also manages to flesh out the foul-mouthed Punjabi to great effect. Anushka Sharma turns in a career-best performance, doing most of the heavy- lifting in the acting department, letting SRK coast along on sheer charm and superstardom. For the record, Anushka's Gujarati accent isn't perfect, and hardly consistent through her dialogue. But she manages to make it a delightful character quirk, and it never jars.

    2. Most interestingly, though, unlike how Imtiaz Ali usually travels back and forth in the lives of the characters to reveal the source of their loneliness, in this film, we discover the characters almost in real- time. We get to see little of why they are how they are, and more of how they react to situations, which gives us only a clue of the character backstory.

In that sense, even among Imtiaz Ali's filmography, this one is more about an actual journey than anything yet. It's more situational, less poetic; more frothy, less esoteric. In many ways, Jab Harry Met Sejal is Imtiaz Ali-lite, propelled mostly by the unfortunate truth that if you have Shah Rukh Khan in your film, it will invariably have to be moulded for a shallower, wider audience.

This also means that you get a more sexist and regressive male character than Imtiaz Ali usually gives us. He treats women as objects for sex, but when he sees one he begins to fall for, he decides she's not the kind who one should fool around with, but looked at from afar. Of course, Harry evolves through the film, but the net result still remains that this is a less gender- sensitive film than Imtiaz Ali's previous work.

But make no mistake: the pain, the quest for solace, the gorgeous little moments that make journeys so much more important than destinations, they're all there. One particular scene has Shah Rukh expressing a range of emotions in a single take; from a frenzied, teary panic attack to cheering up and appreciating the glory of the morning, traversing this emotional journey with a barrage of Punjabi, ostensibly telling himself what his mom told him to calm him when he was a child. It seems like a scene designed for a hyperactive performer like SRK, and he nails it.

Anushka, on the other hand, manages to make you root for her throughout, because there's something about a character that refuses to mince words. She, and SRK's reactions to her, are the constant source of humour in the film, and this film has more of it than any of Ali's recent work. Perhaps that's another reason why JHMS comes across as more flimsy and lightweight than what we've come to expect from Imtiaz Ali.

Despite its seeming lack of depth and the most obvious conflict resolution you could possible imagine, JHMS has much in it to appreciate and love. Everything that makes an Imtiaz Ali film the experience it usually is, is present in JHMS, crafted and designed in a way that makes it more commercial and less-demanding of the viewer. His previous films show you empathy, while Jab Harry Met Sejal gives you a chance to be empathetic.

This film will not have the same kind of cult fandom that some of his other films have gained over the years, but Jab Harry Met Sejal is likely to age better than you'd expect it to, as you discover the little deft touches of Imtiaz's emotional and cinematic intelligence. Sejal and Harry eventually meet halfway, and the story of how they do can probably be experienced as a fan of Imtiaz Ali, if you meet him halfway as well

The excitement amongst fans has reached its zenith. The film promises to be an unconventional love story and that’s been one of the reasons why audience is looking forward to see SRK and Anushka share screen space for the third time.

The mini trials, the songs and the trailer, complemented with the unique way the film has been promoted across India, have all added to the frenzy for Jab Harry Met Sejal. While the film will hit screens tomorrow and even a press show is scheduled for Friday morning, reviews from film critics will only start coming in by early noon tomorrow.

However, someone from the industry has already seen the movie at the special Jab Harry Met Sejal screening held earlier this week and has exclusively shared the review.

As per the insider’s movie review, here are five things that will definitely appeal to you in the film.

    Shah Rukh Khan…

“Jab Harry Met Sejal is the official return of Shah Rukh Khan as the romantic guy we all are madly in love with. If that adoration for his had diminished, for whatever reasons, be sure to fall heads over heels in love with him all over again! His eyes do the talking and not giving in to his charm will be very very difficult for you. Non-SRKians will convert too.”

    The story…

“At its heart, Jab Harry Met Sejal is a love story and its relatability will nudge at your emotions and make the journey of Harry and Sejal a fun-filled, fulfilling ride. Their story has elements that will make you laugh, cry, fall in love and question your feelings and shake some beliefs about how relationships work.”

    Throwback to…
“I hate when film tries to recreate a few scenes from another hit film starring one or two of the cast members. Two scenes in Jab Harry Met Sejal will remind you of SRK-Kajol’s DDLJ. I don’t know if that was intentional and made to act as a throwback. Even if it was, it is done so beautifully and subtly that you won’t mind it.”

    The surprise…
There’s a guide, there’s an engaged girl, there’s a lost ring and a rollercoaster journey to find it – there is a lot that we know about the story of Jab Harry Met Sejal. You might have even predicted what course the film will take and how it will end. But there us a twist, that will take you by surprise and also leave a lump in your throat.”

    Take me back moments
“Imtiaz Ali has a knack for capturing landscapes in the most scenic way possible and he does the same with Jab Harry Met Sejal. The film is shot in various parts of Europe and Punjab, and the filmmaker brings out the unique essence of each of these places in his frames. You would come back wanderlusting after watching the film, perhaps with a few additions on your travel wish list.”

    The other side…
“There are also some moments that might exasperate you. Anushka is lovely and does a decent job at playing the Gujarati girl, however, in some parts, she is seen trying too hard to get the lines and her twang right. This is definitely not an album you’d expect out of an Imtiaz Ali film. Harry, Sejal’s tale could have done without a few songs.”

Parting Note: “All said and done, there’s a lot to love in Jab Harry Met Sejal and very little to hate! I would recommend it to all movie buffs and give it 4 stars.”
